A curious video about chiropractic.

This short video has been posted multiple times by chiropractic students and doctors I follow on social media. They've lauded it as an awesome, simple explanation of chiropractic. I think it's pointless and misleading.

Cute, isn't it? It appears to have been made by an Australian chiropractor at Healing Wave Chiropractic. The music is nice, at least. Since it's just text over a video of driving through moderate traffic (what's the deal with that?), I'll post the transcript here. Most of it is innocuous and fair, but a few lines could use some correction, so I'll add my comments.

This is a very short film about chiropractic.

Well, I'm not convinced it's about anything but, ok.

Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body is controlled by messages travelling along your central nervous system…

Fair enough.

These messages and nerve system are protected by the bones of the spinal column called vertebrae…

Ok, the spinal cord is protected by vertebrae. The rest of the "nerve" system is protected by myelin sheathing, fascia, the skull, etc.

if the bones slip out of position & put pressure on the nerve, what happens to the messages going to your organs???

This is a great question. The best answer is not much. A more correct answer is that no one is really sure. A bone out of place has not been shown to interfere with nerve function… unless it's like really out of place. But most chiropractors don't adjust to correct slipped discs or fully displaced vertebrae.

If this goes unchecked for long enough, what do you think might happen to those organs???

I don't know. I'd love to read some research that offers some explanation.

Over time, what do you think might happen to you???

Again, I don't know.

Chiropractic is not cultish, nor voodoo, nor witchcraft…

Depends on what you mean by chiropractic.

Chiropractic is… LOGIC.

Or "an approach to healing concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health" primarily using manual adjustive therapy. But, yeah, however you want to define it.

Doctors of CHIROPRACTIC study for at least 5 years to perform ONE task…

Ok, I only just finished my first year of chiropractic school and I've learned to do A LOT more than one task.

to assist in taking the bone off the nerve, thus…

Yeah, that's not all I plan to do as a doctor. I'm going to evaluate my patient's physical fitness, posture, nutritional habits, previous medical history, and treat any musculoskeletal complaints using soft tissue techniques, adjustments, and exercise.

restoring the flow of LIFE messages from BRAIN - BODY.

Remains to be supported by scientific evidence. But what are "LIFE messages" anyway? That's a fairly vague term and I don't know what it means. Do you?

Your body is intelligent… it doesn't need any help to heal…

Well, thank you, but flattery won't convince me that you're right.

Just no Interference.

You might want oxygen, proper nutrition, healthy movement in there too. Oh, and maybe no toxic materials, viruses, or genetic defects that impair the immune system. That might be good too.

Chiropractic is NOT about the treatment of disease… That's medicine.

You're entitled to your opinion. And stealing borrowing the opinion of an outspoken, chiropractor-philosopher with mutton chops.

Chiropractic is about the expression of LIFE.

Don't wait for disease to come knocking at your door…

I heartily agree.

Instead, invest in your greatest asset… Health.

Yay!

Chiropractic.

Wait… is this a subtle attempt to equate chiropractic with health? Cause I know LOTS of really unhealthy chiropractors and chiropractic patients. Or "practice members". Whatever you want to call them.

ADIO.

That was fun. I think it's great that someone would take the time to make a video like this. I wish I had the time to make one that's a little more accurate or, you know, has a point.
